What Is an Asian Handicap Bet?

An Asian version of handicap is a form of spread betting, more commonly known as handicap betting. One team is given a certain line, either positive or negative, which they need to overcome in terms of the result to win.

The bookies estimate who the favourites are, and provide handicaps to even the odds between them. Depending on how big the difference in strength is, the higher or lower the handicap can be.

In essence, if team A is stronger than team B, and the bookies estimate team A will win by at least a 2-goal difference, they might offer a handicap of -/+2.5. The positive handicap goes to the underdog and the negative to the favourites.

In this case, if you bet on the underdog with a +2.5 handicap, and they lose with two or fewer goals, you win the bet.

What makes the Asian version of handicap unique is that there is no option for a draw. The margins, or handicaps, the bookies offer come either as full, half, or quarter points.

In further text, we will also elaborate on the differences between the different margins. But, in essence, placing such a bet, you most commonly have three outcomes.

You can either win or lose the bet, but you may also get your stake refunded. Don’t forget you can use a bet calculator to determine the possible payout for your bets.

Asian Handicap Examples

When it comes to handicap betting, you can make a bet on either Team A or Team B. There is no option for a draw.

But, by making this type of bet, you can either win, lose, or get your stake refunded. Check out some examples and cases for each.

Winning the Bet

In order to win the bet, the team you bet on with the handicap needs to overcome the margin score-wise. That means if the margin is +/-1.5, the underdog can lose with a one-goal difference, but not with a two-goal difference.

Similarly, the favourites need to win with a two-goal difference to win the bet, as their margin will be negative.

For example, in one of the more recent Premier League games between Arsenal and West Ham, the final score was 3:1. Let’s say the handicap for Arsenal as the favourites were -1.5. If you bet on Arsenal to win with the handicap, as they overcame the set margin.

Losing the Bet

Oppositely, if the team you bet on doesn’t overcome the margin, or rather losses with the added margin, you lose your bet.

For example, if the margin is +/-0.5, and you bet on the favourites, if the game ends in a draw, you lose the bet. Similarly, if you bet on the underdog, and they lose with a goal difference, you lose the bet.

For example, let’s see how it works by using one of the recent Premier League games between Leicester and Newcastle. Newcastle was the favourite, but the handicap was likely to be around +/- 0.5.

If you bet on the underdog, Leicester, to win with a positive handicap of 0.5, you would have lost the bet.

The game ended 3:0 in favour of Newcastle, and even with the added margin, Newcastle would still win. You would still lose the bet even if the margin were +1.5, or even +2.5.

Even if you add those margins to Leicester, they still lost the game.

Refund

Finally, the third option is to get a refund of your stake. Although this option is available if you are making a bet on a full, or quarter handicap.

If the result of the bet is a draw once you add the handicap to the final result, you will get your stake back.

For example, in a recent game between Aston Villa and Liverpool, the odds favoured Liverpool.

Let’s say the handicap on Liverpool was -2. In this case, if you bet on Liverpool with the negative handicap, you would get your stake back.

The final score was 3:1 in favour of Liverpool, so once you add the handicap, or in this case, decide the two, it’s a draw. This means that the bet is void. If this was the only bet on your slip, you get your stake back.

If it was an accumulator bet, it will depend on the outcome of the other bets.

Types of Asian Handicap

As mentioned in the previous text, there are different margins bookies can set for handicap betting.

There are full, half, and quarter margins. Each has unique features and needs different results for the bet to win.

Full-Goal Handicap

When it comes to the full-goal handicap, the bookies place a full goal margin. The margin can be +/- 1, +/- 2, +/- 3, etc.

But there is one more unique, the zero margin, or the Draw No Bet. With this margin, you can either win, lose the bet, or get a refund.

Half-Goal Handicap

With half-goal handicaps, you can either win or lose your bet. The possible margins include +/-0.5, +/-1,5, etc.

Understanding the margin is simple, as there are only two possible outcomes. Just add the margin to the team you bet on, and see the final result.

Quarter-Goal Handicaps

Quarter-goal handicaps are a combination of the aforementioned two. You can easily understand the market if you divide it into two bets.

Simply split the quarter handicap between the two closest handicaps. Think of it as placing half a bet on each of the closest handicaps, the half-goal, and the full-goal handicap.

Asian Handicap Tips

There are no guarantees that if you follow any tips you will make a winning bet.

But, there are some elements you can include in your search which could help you. We list some of the tips you can follow.

Do Research

Before you start placing bets, make sure you do your research. Check the previous results, the team’s form, how much they are scoring etc.

Based on your research, you can determine whether your bet has potential. With this, you can find your value bet.

Consider the Underdogs

With handicap betting, you can get even odds for both teams. Check out the margins set by the bookies, and consider betting on the underdogs.

Don’t Overdo It

Make sure you don’t bet more than you can. Set a limit, and make sure you don’t go over it. If you make a losing bet, don’t try to recover.

Each operator has a safer gambling section on their website you can check out for any assistance you might need.
